Today Jesus tells us something very confusing… “If anyone comes to me without hating his mother and father, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Why would Jesus want us to hate our family anyways? It sounds crazy!
This reading doesn’t mean He wants us to hate them or reject them, but instead to love God more than anyone or anything else. He is telling us that God is more important than anyone or anything in our lives.
Once we choose him, nothing else in our lives can be better than God. Ok, so I love God and I tell Him and everyone else that I love Him. Isn’t that enough?
No! Think about it… if everything I do or think, is about getting someone to like “me” or the things I say… or about the work I do, then honor is the most important thing in my life, NOT JESUS.
If I spend all my defending Princess Pea or building a cool new city in Roblox, then I am putting those things before my family AND before God.
AND If I spend all my time on family only, then family is the most important thing, not God! Honor and family can be used to serve God, but shouldn’t replace God.
Does that mean I should throw my Mario cart or cell phone out? No… but you should always show God and your family who and what is more important BEFORE you think about the games and TV.
That is so hard… my games are so much fun… how do I do that? How do I separate myself from things, even for a little while?
What are some ways you can show that you choose God over family and things?
- Make time with God everyday: Set aside time each day specifically for prayer and to connect with God.
- Take away disruptions: Think about the things that I have and do everyday. What defines me? What is keeping me from walking with God? What keeps me from seeking His wisdom? How can I remove those things?.
- Give things up daily: Doing things like fasting or not eating your favorite treat. Give something up each day! This can help me gain control over worldly things. Spiritual purification.
- What I need vs what I want: Understand that I only need the basics (air, water, food, sleep). Try seeing that other things are all “nice-to-haves” rather than something I need.
- Seek God First: Make Him a priority and seek God and His kingdom before anything else in my life.
- Be grateful everyday: Thank others and be grateful for the good things God gives us. Thank Him for each new day we have. It keeps us from being self-centered and to look at others instead.
- Serve others: Serve God and others by praying for them, encouraging them, and do acts of service for others. This can move us away from self-focus.
- Pray to St. Michael in times when it is hard to fight things I know is wrong.

Hoy Jesús nos dice algo muy confuso… “Si alguno viene a mí y no aborrece a su madre y a su padre, e incluso su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo”. ¿Por qué querría Jesús que odiáramos a nuestra familia? ¡Parece una locura!
Esta lectura no significa que Él quiera que los odiemos o los rechacemos, sino que amemos a Dios más que a cualquier otra cosa. Nos dice que Dios es más importante que cualquier persona y cosa en nuestras vidas.
Una vez que lo elegimos, nada en nuestras vidas puede ser mejor que Dios. Bueno, entonces amo a Dios y le digo a Él y a todos que lo amo. ¿No es eso suficiente?
¡No! Piénsalo… si todo lo que hago o pienso se trata de agradarle a alguien, o de lo que digo… o del trabajo que hago, entonces el honor es lo más importante en mi vida, NO JESÚS.
Si me paso todo el tiempo defendiendo a la Princesa Pea o construyendo una ciudad genial en Roblox, entonces estoy poniendo esas cosas por delante de mi familia y de Dios.
Y si dedico todo mi tiempo solo a la familia, entonces la familia es lo más importante, ¡no Dios! El honor y la familia pueden usarse para servir a Dios, pero no deben reemplazarlo.
¿Eso significa que debería tirar mi carrito de Mario o mi celular? No… pero siempre debes mostrarle a Dios y a tu familia quién y qué es más importante ANTES de pensar en los juegos y la televisión.
Es muy difícil… mis juegos son muy divertidos… ¿cómo lo hago? ¿Cómo me separo de las cosas, aunque sea por un rato?
¿De qué maneras puedes demostrar que eliges a Dios por encima de la familia y las cosas?
- Dedica tiempo a Dios todos los días: Reserva un tiempo cada día específicamente para orar y conectarte con Dios.
- Elimina las interrupciones: Piensa en las cosas que tengo y hago todos los días. ¿Qué me define? ¿Qué me impide caminar con Dios? ¿Qué me impide buscar su sabiduría? ¿Cómo puedo eliminar esas cosas?
- Renuncia a cosas a diario: Haz cosas como ayunar o no comer tu dulce favorito. ¡Renuncia a algo cada día! Esto puede ayudarme a controlar las cosas mundanas. Purificación espiritual.
- Lo que necesito vs. lo que quiero: Entender que solo necesito lo básico (aire, agua, comida, sueño). Intentar ver que las demás cosas son solo “bonitas” en lugar de algo que necesito.
- Buscar a Dios primero: Priorizarlo y buscar a Dios y su reino antes que cualquier otra cosa en mi vida.
- Ser agradecido cada día: Agradecer a los demás y agradecer las cosas buenas que Dios nos da. Agradecerle por cada nuevo día que tenemos. Nos ayuda a no ser egocéntricos y a fijarnos en los demás.
- Servir a los demás: Servir a Dios y a los demás orando por ellos, animándolos y realizando actos de servicio. Esto puede alejarnos del egocentrismo.
- Oremos a San Miguel en los momentos en los que nos resulte difícil luchar contra cosas que sabemos que están mal.
